Characteristics of the library's collection

The library collection was influenced by the focus of the library after its foundation as the State Study Library in 1945. It first concentrated on local industrial production and later on study specialisations at the local college, its principle task being to unite the functions of a research library and municipal library under one roof.

Our collection now specialises on textiles, glass and educational literature (with regard to the Faculty of Education at the Technical University in Liberec). The library has long been involved in adding to the historical collection of "Germanics in the Czech Lands" with documents that focus on relations between Czechs and Germans.

The library collection is built on a universal basis and added to through purchases, donations and compulsory issue print. Since 1995 we have only had the right to regional compulsory issue print and to national compulsory issue print for Czech periodicals.

The foundation of our collection is based on printed documents in the form of books, serials, sheet music and maps. Documents are regularly added on other carriers - audio, visual and electronic documents. The library collection is able to boast 1 200 000 items, 230 000 of these freely accessible in the library itself. The collection is made up of documents for children, young people and adults, non-fiction and fiction.

You will find records of all documents from 1991 (and a selection of older documents) in our on-line catalogue or in the card index in the Study Library (to 1991).
